Should Mobile Phones Be Allowed In School?

Yes that’s right, I asked the age-old question, should mobile phones be allowed in school? My answer is “No” and keep in mind, this is just my opinion on this subject so I will understand if you disagree with me with your own views on this topic. I’ve been out of school since 1998 and back in that time, cell phones was not that popular, huge and expensive. Pagers was the favorite device to have in highschool but our highschool had rules for these types of device’s and you would get suspended for 3 days for having one in class. The teachers are being paid to teach you and don’t like distractions as hearing a beeping sound or a vibrating sound as the pager in your pocket was pressed up against your school chair. Now if cell phones wasn’t that huge as in carrying a brick everyday, us students would have bought one but they was not cheap and we all worked park time.

My parents had a cell phone at this time but it was for emergency use only. Meaning if me or my brother was in trouble, needed our parents right away, we could call them a.s.a.p. instead of waiting for them to call us to say where they at. They didn’t want us calling them to say what’s for dinner and other useless stuff. Look below for a brief timeline of how cell phone technology has come from. Imagine back in the day carrying a big cell phone to school with not many features as in no vibrate one. Have that phone go off in class and annoy the teaching who is trying to teach today’s school lesson. Back in my school day, if you had a cell phone, people thought you was a drug dealer. Yes, people stereotyped other kids in my highschool.

Getting back to today’s world with smaller phones, more powerful features at your disposal, kids could use their mobile devices in school to cheat on tests. This is my biggest problem is kids using their phones to Google answers, text friends in class while the teacher is writing stuff on the chalk board. In fact, kids should not have cell phones not unless they actually bought it themself and pay their own phone bill. Yes, parents get there kids phones because they want to be able to contact them at anytime to find out where they are or in case of an emergency but do you know that your kids abuse their cell phone privilege?

Hey, have you looked at your cell phone bill for your kid’s phone number? Did you buy a package and thought your kid wouldn’t go over the data plan? I bet your kid is texting people in between class’s or during class’s. I don’t know if my old highschool has placed any new school policies on cell phone’s in school but I’m sure they adapted as the technology has gotten better. I won’t lie but I’d use my phone to cheat on tests in school when the teacher wasn’t looking at me. Of course cheating your way through school won’t help when you go to college or get a job in life as you’d be clueless without a phone to google for an answer.

How about bring the phone to school but leave it out of site and off when in class. When you on the bus, turn the phone off and check messages. The kids parents know not to call their kid while they in class because they think there kids are actually learning in school and not playing games on their phone during study hall.

Wait a minute, this blog post has become a rant. Going to stop typing now as I could really go off the deep end on why I don’t like mobile devices being used in school. If you are a school teacher, does it annoy you when you catch a student in class using their phone or you hear the phone during your class? Post your rant in the blog comment field below school teacher’s.
