Pets in the Office: Deal Maker or Breaker?

Offices the world over have become much less formal over time, with less stringent dress codes, more flexible work hours, and now even pets are being welcomed at many workplaces.

Imagine sitting at your desk typing away while your cat naps on your lap, or your puppy plays with a toy at your feet. Now, if you’re not a pet owner or even a pet person, this set up is definitely not for you.

But if you’re the kind of person whose heart breaks a little every morning when you have to leave your furry friend home alone while you set off to bring home the bacon then this idea might be right up your alley.

If you, your boss, or your office, has been considering putting this plan into effect at your workplace then check out this list of pros and cons first to weigh your options and figure out if this could or might not work for you.

Pros to Allowing Pets in the Workplace

The American Humane Association did a study and discovered that employees who bring their pets to work are less stressed during work hours than people without pets, and they’re much more relaxed than employees who have pets but choose to leave them at home.

Pets roaming around office cubicles don’t only affect their owners though, studies have shown that having animals at work can lower absence rates of employees, increase camaraderie between co-workers, and simply lead to happier workers overall.

People who brought their pets into work felt that their managers and bosses were being more supportive and cared more about them and their happiness in the office.

Cons to Having Pets in the Office

There are some significant cons to consider in this scenario and the implementation of this rule shouldn’t be taken lightly.

First and foremost, your landlord may not allow pets on the premises – so check that before you spend time discussing this among yourselves.

Secondly, this shouldn’t split the office in two, drawing a line between those who approve and those who don’t. You want to encourage unity in your office, not resentment.

You should also be sure that your company has a proper insurance plan in place just in case a pet bites or scratches an employee or causes a severe allergic reaction.

Following the Rules

If your office has decided to allow pets in the work place then great! But you have to set up proper rules and guidelines that pet owners need to follow in order to bring their pet to work.

For example, some rules that should be followed include; bringing all the right documentation to work first in order to check that the pet is up to date on all vaccinations and flea treatments, three ‘accidents’ and you’re out, your pet must play well with other animals, bring your own natural pet products such as food and water, and don’t forget to whip out that dog shampoo and be sure your pet smells nice before you bring him/her into work!

Do any of you work in pet-friendly offices and have some anecdotes to share with us about it?
