Selecting a forum niche can be challenging, there are many possibilities and many that are saturated beyond belief. Selecting a niche that is meaningful to you and a niche that you enjoy enough to talk about it everyday are things to take into consideration. Do a Google search of your topic of interest and add “forum” or “forums” to the end, how many results appear? Are there already a ton of forums that apply to this niche and if so, you need to ask yourself how you will stand out from those that are already established.
I’ve been involved in many forums, from both a member to an administrator and the hardest thing is to see a forum fail only because the amount of competition that is already out there. The administrator may have the passion, there may have been some financial investment made to get the name out, but the forum still fails because of having competion with deeper pockets or more friends. Of course failure can be defined however the administrator of a troubled forum pleases, I never looked at any of my forums that never made a huge return as a failure simply because I learned something from each.
There are many forums out there for gaming, webmaster, forum administration, and general discussion. This doesn’t mean that you will not be able to make something out of your new forum but it does mean that those niches are saturated and you need to come up with an idea to be unique. What can you offer your audience? What can you do better than the competition? What will make you stand out and make the competition’s members want to become your members? These are simple questions to ask when selecting any niche but even more crucial if you are considering entering a niche that is populated with forums or message boards.
However, selecting the niche that you are about to venture into with your new forum can be a challenge and it’s important that you take competition, keywords, your experience, and your heart into consideration before you jump in. Loosing motivation to make your forum a success is a hard thing to overcome because you always have that in the back of your head, also realizing that your forum will likely not become a success overnight is another thing to realize.
The forum niche you have selected needs to be something you care about, this alone can keep the motivation in you the level you need it to be in order to see success. Determine the niche you are considering, do the proper research, ask yourself if you truly have the drive to make it, and begin laying out the blueprints for your next forum.
